Reason code C14: Paid by Other Means

C14 asserts that the cardmember paid for the purchase through another method, cash, check, a different card, or a gift card, and the Amex charge is therefore a duplicate collection. The merchant ends up holding two payments for one sale, at least in the cardmember's telling.

Frequently asked questions

The customer paid twice because their first attempt looked declined. What now?
Refund one of the captures immediately and document the credit in your dispute response. Contesting a genuine double charge damages your credibility on future cases.
How do I prove the customer did not pay by other means?
You largely prove the affirmative: one order, one capture, one balance. Provide the order's complete payment history and, where the customer offers alternate-payment evidence, show it maps to a different transaction.
