Reason code FR4: Immediate Chargeback Program
An FR4 chargeback tells you the merchant account has been placed in Amex's Immediate Chargeback Program: cardmember disputes are debited from the merchant right away instead of starting with an inquiry. Unlike FR2, it applies to disputes generally, not only fraud claims, and it reflects an excessive overall dispute rate.
Issuer filing window
standard dispute windows apply to the cardmember, typically 120 days, but the resulting chargeback posts immediately without an inquiry
Merchant response window
typically 20 days to submit a response after the immediate chargeback posts
Why FR4 chargebacks happen
- The account's total dispute ratio exceeded Amex thresholds across recent measurement periods.
- Slow or absent responses to earlier Amex inquiries convinced Amex that the inquiry step was wasted effort on this account.
- Aggressive marketing, unclear billing terms, or fulfillment problems generated a sustained stream of cardmember complaints.
- A previous monitoring status was not remediated, so Amex escalated the account to immediate chargeback treatment.
How to fight a FR4 chargeback
- You can still respond to FR4 chargebacks with evidence, but the money moves first; build representment packets exactly as you would for the underlying dispute type.
- Match each FR4 debit to the original cardmember claim and answer that claim on its merits with delivery proof, refund records, or authentication data.
- Push through your processor to learn your current Amex merchant status, the dispute-rate target, and the review timeline for leaving the program.
- Cut off dispute inflow at the source with descriptor fixes, faster refunds, and proactive customer outreach so the ratio recovers.
How to prevent FR4 chargebacks
- Answer every Amex inquiry inside the deadline, because inquiry non-response is a direct path into this program.
- Watch your Amex dispute ratio weekly rather than discovering it in a program-placement letter.
- Resolve complaints in your own support channel before customers escalate to Amex, whose cardmembers dispute readily.
- Keep refund latency low; a refund posted before the dispute is filed removes the case entirely.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between FR4 and FR2?
- FR2 (Fraud Full Recourse) applies to fraud-coded disputes and removes representment. FR4 applies to disputes broadly, skips the inquiry so the debit is immediate, but generally still allows the merchant to respond with evidence.
- Do FR4 chargebacks hurt my dispute ratio more than normal ones?
- They count like any other chargeback, but the real damage is procedural: without the inquiry stage you lose the chance to resolve disputes before they become chargebacks, so the ratio climbs faster for the same complaint volume.
