Decline code 55: Incorrect PIN

The PIN entered with the transaction does not match the one on file at the issuer. This code belongs to PIN-verified debit and card-present flows; the card and account are fine, but the secret the cardholder typed was wrong. A correct entry on the next attempt normally approves.

Should you retry?

One or two re-entries are fine and usually succeed. Issuers cap consecutive wrong attempts, typically at three, before returning code 75 and locking PIN use, so stop prompting after the second failure and switch payment method instead.

Frequently asked questions

How many times can a customer retry their PIN after code 55?
Issuers typically allow about three consecutive wrong entries before locking PIN use and returning code 75. Practically, let the customer retry once or twice, then offer a different payment method.
Why would an online transaction return incorrect PIN code 55?
It should not, since standard ecommerce transactions carry no PIN. Seeing 55 online points to a debit-network routing or message configuration problem in your processing setup rather than anything the customer did.
