Decline code 75: PIN Tries Exceeded
The cardholder entered a wrong PIN too many times, usually three, and the issuer has locked PIN-based use of the card. The account and funds remain intact; the PIN pathway is frozen until the issuer resets it or an unlock condition is met. This code follows a run of code 55 responses.
Should you retry?
A non-PIN verification path can be tried immediately and frequently succeeds. PIN retries are futile until the issuer resets the counter, which for some issuers requires a call or app action and for others an ATM operation. Do not resubmit PIN transactions on a schedule; the lock does not expire predictably.
Why code 75 happens
- Consecutive incorrect PIN entries exhausted the issuer's attempt counter.
- The cardholder forgot a recently changed PIN and locked themselves out trying.
- A thief with a physical card guessed PINs until the counter tripped.
- Attempt counters accumulated across different terminals and days, so the final lockout landed on an innocent-looking single attempt.
What to do about it
- Stop PIN prompts entirely for the card; further entries are pointless against a locked counter.
- Offer signature, contactless, or credit-routed processing if the transaction context supports a non-PIN path, since only PIN verification is locked.
- Advise the customer to contact their bank to reset the PIN, or to use another card to complete the purchase now.
- In unattended environments, treat cards arriving already locked out as elevated theft risk and lean on other verification.
Frequently asked questions
- How does a customer unlock a card after code 75?
- Through their issuer: typically a call to the bank, a reset in the banking app, or at some banks an ATM PIN operation. The merchant cannot clear the lock, and further PIN attempts before a reset accomplish nothing.
- Can a card with PIN tries exceeded still be charged another way?
- Often yes. The lock applies to PIN verification, so signature, contactless, or credit-routed transactions may still approve depending on the issuer and card. Offering a non-PIN path is the fastest way to save the sale.
